Chapter 8

“Mila, are you okay?” April’s face swam in front of mine, concern creasing her features. Calamity had hopped onto my lap, and her mismatched eyes were creased with worry.

“Uh, yeah, I guess.” Despite being pitted against each other in competitions, I’d had a good working relationship with Katrina. She’d been an excellent potions witch and had often referred clients to me when they needed something she was either out of or didn’t carry, and I’d done the same. We hadn’t been bosom buddies, but we’d been friendly.

I thought back to when Ms. Lucille had said she was considering Katrina’s products instead of mine and was a little ashamed of myself for being irritated. Then I remembered what the older lady had said about Katrina standing her up. The poor woman had probably been dead while I was half-heartedly wishing she’d get a raging case of crabs.

I hoped against hope it had been a freak accident. Maybe she’d done something similar to what I had that morning and messed up ingredients, then used her own potion. Or maybe she’d been brewing something tricky and the fumes had poisoned her. That was rare, but it could happen. “Was she ... does Michael think she was murdered, Kira?”

Kira glanced up from her phone. “I’m afraid so. She looks the same as Amelia—the only way they knew it was her was because she was wearing a band tee-shirt her assistant had bought for her at a concert and her favorite shoes.”

“So what does that mean?” April asked. “Do we have a maniac on the loose in the Gate, or is it one of your souls?”

I replied for Kira. “I doubt this is the work of one witch. No mortal person could steal that much vitality or power in such a short amount of time. The human body simply couldn’t hold it, not to mention they’d probably be aged back to a toddler.”

“Could they store it?” April asked. “Like in a flask or an object or something?”

I shook my head. “Probably not. I suppose it’s possible, but I’ve never heard of it being done.”

She lifted a shoulder. “Stranger things happen around here.”

“True, but not by much.” I couldn’t imagine the focus and strength of will it would take to pull off that sort of magic.

Kira frowned and pulled a small, leather-bound book from one of the side pockets of her bag, then placed it on the table and spoke to it. “Vitality thief. Youth thief. Magic thief.”

I raised a brow as the book open and pages moved on their own, standing in bunches midair as if they were marking different spots. Kira divided them with her fingers, and the pages drifted over them. She scanned the four different entries. “It looks like I have four candidates.”

“What is that?” April asked as she sat back down and moved closer so she could see.

“My Aunt Nevvie made it for me. It’s a miniature version of our database of souls. She and my other aunt couldn’t leave
